6-16-2008 - I am researching the F-101 Voodoo and am interested in all aspects of the F-101s associated with Project Oxcart and Area 51. I would love to hear your stories of the Missions flown in the Voodoo, as well as information on what Voodoo tail numbers were assigned to the program, and timelines of the aircraft's involvement with Project Oxcart. I would also love to see any photos of the F-101s that flew in support of Project Oxcart. I will gladly pay for duplication or scanning fees of any of these F-101 photos, or any documentation you may have. This information is for my personal collection only. Sincere Thanks,

One of my dear friends and colleagues Dr Tom Budzynski suggested your website because of my unusual research areas. These as a clinical psychologist for 34 years are in Mind/Body Medicine. One on my major contributions in continuing service before self is in anti-terrorism. As an Aussie, I had the privilidge of PhD from Col Russell N. Cassel USAF (2 bird FSR) Russ taught me more than just psychology and since 1979 I have continued to visit the US, finally eventuating as Chairman for 8000 Forensic Psychologists. What I see in this website are superlative expressions of friendship and fascination where ole buddies not just talk but continue to contribute. Most of all I like the motto "In God We Trust" and the rest we monitor.
Cheers from Australia and a very relaxing and Happy Easter vacation.

Hi my name is Erik bultz, I am 20 yrs old, and I have been a fan of the skunk works since I was a kid. I grew up reading books about the stealth, and other aircraft, and eventually building models. Well until the Boeing Bird of Prey was revealed, I looked into patch collecting, until this year. I not long ago around the beginning of the year decided that I had better get my Patch collection underway, and I was wanting to ask if you know if there is a way to place an ad or something stating looking for Special Projects Patches from the past. I already now Pete merlin, and a few other people that I met here and there. One guy I met on ebay. But as far as things with ebay go, and sometimes skeptical cause I would like the original piece. I would like to find an Original or the closest thing to it?

He is at The Chapel of the Twin Cities (Albert Ulmer, owner), 715 Shasta St., Yuba City, CA. 95991 530-673-4360 Carl’s home phone is 530-674-1647. Sandy and his housekeeper, Jody, will probably stay there. We (Marilyn and me) will not be here next week. We will be out of state. Good Morning Sir,
We wish to thank you for the very respectful slide show presentation of the services held at Arlington earlier this month for the late Colonel Ray W. Schrecengost Jr. USAF (Retired). That superb presentation certainly reflects the honor and dignity of the military services held at the Fort Myer Chapel and at Arlington.

We have also sent your link on to the USAF Chaplin (Captain Kenneth E. Fisher, USAF) to share with the officers and men of the USAF and US Army Honor Guards who participated in those services. Captain Fisher has expressed their mutual gratitude for your posting in honor of Colonel Schrecengost.

Our sincere thanks to both you and Major Dick Roussell, USAF (Retired) and all the members of the Roadrunners Internationale. You have provided both a living history of that epic era and a fitting tribute to all the
officers and men who served in that unique activity. Thanks to your efforts, it is a legacy that can now be shared by all.

Thank you again,

Ed Miller

Good Morning Captain Fisher,

The photos are posted at the following link: http://roadrunnersinternationale.com/schrecengost.html Scroll down to the bottom, and the photos of memorial services are posted in a continual-loop presentation at the bottom of that web page.

Mr. Barnes:
Thank you for passing along my message. I have been contacted, via email, by Mr. Tony Bevacqua in which he has contacted Mr. Tom Bowen, who had worked with him. My brothers and I appreciate your help with any information you and the Road Runners members may have regarding our father.
Prior Message

I would like to hear from any "Road Runners" that may have worked with my father, Bruce E Bassett at Groom Lake in the late 1960's. I know that he developed the flight suits for the U2 & SR-71 and worked at Groom Lake when enlisted from the USAF by the CIA. I would like to have some insight on his accomplishments from friends and fellow workers from this era. Bruce Bassett passed away May 7th, 2002, fours days shy of meeting his second grandson. I would like to have information about him, as I would enjoy passing on his accomplishments to his now, three grandsons. Thank you for any insight you may have on Bruce Bassett. Email me at andrew@doctorfurnace.com
Again, thank you.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I have thoroughly enjoyed your web site. All too often, the general public has grave mis-conceptions concerning our government, intelligence agencies and black projects. It is indeed refreshing and encouraging to view the many presentations you have provided to better pay well deserved and long overdue tribute to all the dedicated professionals at CIA,NSA, USAF, and other countless individuals at Groom who play a vital role in protecting our nation against our enemies.
As former USAF and presently with the airlines (in Houston), I will admit I am extremely fascinated about what present day Groom and associated technology must be like, however we all realize the importance of the mission and the necessity of secrecy. Nonetheless, I pray that one day, I too could one day participate in some way. As we celebrate our Independence Day, I say Thank You Sir in your service as a Roadrunner in helping to keep our country free.

I started my first of 2 tours in Nam about the time you transferred to JAG after your injury. Looks like you didn't let any grass grow under your feet. Way to go! I recognized you to be a great leader the first week of your Mickey Mouse period at Robinson Barracks. I'm sure you remember me from your Jark marches up BM-4 to work off your demerits. What a site! I could spend weeks reading and viewing all the history gathered here. I was involved with both the the SR-71 and the U-2; the SR-71 from the time it started operating at Beale AFB until it was retired and the U-2 from the time it was transfered to Beale from Arizona until I retired from Houston Fearless in 1998. I was in the Air Force in the 9th Wing from 1965 until 1980 as a photo interpreter, then computer operations, then 9th Wing Senior Enlisted Advisor. After my Air Force career I was employed by a 9th supporting contractor, Houston Fearless 76, until I retired in 1998. During those years there were a lot of days, months, even years spent where those planes were operating in various locations.

Lt. Barnes, I was two classes behind you in OCS at Fort Sill. I still remember the lyrics to the Mickey Mouse theme song that we sang on our Jark Marches and on the buses as we returned to Robinson Barracks for an evening of harrassment. You was the first Upperclassman to call me Smack and order me to give you fifty. As I recall, you snagged a JAG slot while the rest of us pukes headed to Nam. Try to make the next OCS reunion at Fort Sill. We'll do Happy Hour. Just so you'll know, I still haven't forgotten the demerits you gave me for my failure to eat at attention and do 3 chews and a swallow. You made a soldier out of me.

Great site. I was a doppler technician with the RB-57D's and the first U-2's to arrive at Laughlin AFB. We were moved from Turner AFB in April of 1957 to Laughlin after being trained on the RB-57's. We were unaware of the U-2's until the day they arrived. I worked on the aircraft until July of 1958, then left the AF for a few months. Happened to bring the F-105's to Patrick AFB, FL in November of 1960 to see the first public display. The pilot also did a short flight in the A/C and the crowd moved so close it was difficult for the aircraft to taxi. Both the U-2 and RB-57 D's were amazing aircraft and a real challenge to work on.

Good site! In 1977, I flew a specially equipped avionics test NKC-135 against the Migs in Groom's lake, operating from Nellis. At the time, I was a research pilot with the 4950th Test Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB. The radar controller referred to them as a "Type 1" and a "Type 2". I don't recall which was which, but I visually spotted both the -17 and the -21 on those flights.

Heavyweight Lifting Body:

Someplace in my "Stuff" I have a head-on photo (from the end of the runway) of "Chuck" Thompson landing the first flight of the first HLB -- just hanging there with no visible means of support -- impressive -- The chase plane movies of his side-slipping to line up the runway, and hitting the inversiion layer where startling; he was thrown into wide swings, and had to go through several gyrations/swings to stablize; at the first showing of the film, someone called out, "Hey Chuck, what were you doing there?" He replied, "I was just trying to see if it would roll." -- I was disappointed not to see picture(s) of him in the Lifting Body section.

A side-light not given here in the crash report, as I Remember it, is below.

The F-104: if the pilot wanted to quickly go up to avoid an obstacle, he had to do a barrel-roll.
Walker had experienced flame-outs when flying at low speed and suddenly applying full power, he had the habit of flying slow missions at full power and with his dive-brakes extended, that way when he pulled his brakes in, he shot ahead like a hot-rod burning rubber.

Walker had not yet flown the XB-70, he was scheduled for the next day,and had not experienced its remarkably rapid acceleration.

The consensus of the local expert opinions was that when mission control announced that the mission was over, Walker anxious to get away from the slow speed and tight formation, pulled his dive-brakes, and went into a barrel roll to pass over the XB-70. At the same time the XB-70 pilots nervous about the slow speed, fire-walled their throttles, and their rapid acceleration put them in the air-space Walker expected to fly in.

I listened to NASA's Director of Biological research (Major Roman, M.D.), who was the investigating doctor at the site, report that Walker had been up-side-down at the instant of the crash, and that the vertical stabilizer of the XB-70 had split Walker's cockpit and flight-helmet into two.

Beautiful site, The tragedy that haunts me is that all the pilots involved in this accident took calculated risks, and to lose test pilots for a useless photo shoot brings it all home.

Are there other memorials to Joe Walker and Major Cross? I am researching test pilots and would apreciate any information regarding these 2 outstanding aviation pioneers.

Walkers last words regarding the dangers involved in this flight must have resonated for years, and still do for me personally.

If anyone out there has any further information regarding this request, I would be very appreciative.

Thank you.

I'm a bit biased but in my opinion the XB70 is the
most beautiful plane ever built. Your web page
gave me some insights into it's brief life that I
have never seen before. I still marvel at what
was accomplished, as you say, with stone age tech.
Amazing.

I said I'm a bit biased because my godfather was
a subcontractor on the project and before his death
gave to me a corporate model of the plane, made of some
kind of very hard plastic. Yellowed with age, it still
in my eyes was the most beautiful thing I'd seen.
(And at the time I didn't even know it was called Valkyre
the mounting stand only reads XB70)

So, thank you for your informative web page... in some
small way it makes me feel closer to my godfather.

Thank You,
Tom

My father Richard D Kohl Sr or "Dick" for those who new him recently passed away after having been diagnosed with cancer of the liver, brain, lungs. He worked on the NERVA project for Aerojet General at NRDS Jackass Flats, Nevada from it's inception to completion. He was also involved with the Atlas and Mariner Space Programs for Convair and Pratt/Whitney. I have been learning more about what he did since his death 8-17-2004 by visiting sites such as these than he was able to tell us as children for security reasons in the 1960's. A memorial for him will be on 9-18-2004 at 1pm at the Masonic Memorial Temple 2200 W. Mesquite Las Vegas, Nevada all are welcome especially those who knew him.
