What a site! I could spend weeks reading and viewing all the
history gathered here. I was involved with both the the SR-71 and the
U-2; the SR-71 from the time it started operating at Beale AFB until it
was retired and the U-2 from the time it was transfered to Beale from
Arizona until I retired from Houston Fearless in 1998. I was in the Air
Force in the 9th Wing from 1965 until 1980 as a photo interpreter, then
computer operations, then 9th Wing Senior Enlisted Advisor. After my
Air Force career I was employed by a 9th supporting contractor, Houston
Fearless 76, until I retired in 1998. During those years there were a
lot of days, months, even years spent where those planes were operating
in various locations.

Great site. I was a doppler technician with the RB-57D's and the first
U-2's to arrive at Laughlin AFB. We were moved from Turner AFB in April
of 1957 to Laughlin after being trained on the RB-57's. We were unaware
of the U-2's until the day they arrived. I worked on the aircraft until
July of 1958, then left the AF for a few months. Happened to bring the
F-105's to Patrick AFB, FL in November of 1960 to see the first public
display. The pilot also did a short flight in the A/C and the crowd
moved so close it was difficult for the aircraft to taxi. Both the U-2
and RB-57 D's were amazing aircraft and a real challenge to work
on.

Fantastic site, very well organized presentation of a tragedy that did
not need to happen. Is a cruel irony that Joe Walker being the inocent
initiator of this tragic event, was the one who officially protested
the carry on of this dangerous, and wasteful mission. Thanks for
honoring Walker and Cross.

I also took this ship to Germany. I was in the US Army. I remember
well, the rough and cold north sea, in January of 1965. We sailed into
Bremerhaven, Germany. Here I started my 2year stay
at uncle sam's request. I was active duty for 3 years, and though it
took the Buckner 8 days,(to go over), it only took 8 hours to return to
the states in June 1967.

My father, who has had several strokes, worked on this project as the
resident engineer. He took great pride in this particular missile and I
know he would have loved this web page. I remember him talking about
the missile and I really enjoyed reading this web page.

Hi. I love your website. Great music and great text. I am an
author/publisher of books on experimental aviation and I wrote and
published the only monograph on the MX-324/MX-334/XP-79 project, with
every single flight listed.
I am now preparing to launch a new magazine called World X-Planes and
this will feature many Northjrop designs flown at Roach Lake.

Heavyweight Lifting Body:
Someplace in my "Stuff" I have a head-on photo (from the end of the
runway) of "Chuck" Thompson landing the first flight of the first HLB
-- just hanging there with no visible means of support -- impressive --
The chase plane movies of his side-slipping to line up the runway, and
hitting the inversiion layer where startling; he was thrown into wide
swings, and had to go through several gyrations/swings to stablize; at
the first showing of the film, someone called out, "Hey Chuck, what
were you doing there?" He replied, "I was just trying to see if it
would roll." -- I was disappointed not to see picture(s) of him in the
Lifting Body section.

A side-light not given here in the crash report, as I Remember it, is
below.
The F-104: if the pilot wanted to quickly go up to avoid an obstacle,
he had to do a barrel-roll.
Walker had experienced flame-outs when flying at low speed and suddenly
applying full power, he had the habit of flying slow missions at full
power and with his dive-brakes extended, that way when he pulled his
brakes in, he shot ahead like a hot-rod burning rubber.
Walker had not yet flown the XB-70, he was scheduled for the next
day,and had not experienced its remarkably rapid acceleration.
The consensus of the local expert opinions was that when mission
control announced that the mission was over, Walker anxious to get away
from the slow speed and tight formation, pulled his dive-brakes, and
went into a barrel roll to pass over the XB-70. At the same time the
XB-70 pilots nervous about the slow speed, fire-walled their throttles,
and their rapid acceleration put them in the air-space Walker expected
to fly in.
I listened to NASA's Director of Biological research (Major Roman,
M.D.), who was the investigating doctor at the site, report that Walker
had been up-side-down at the instant of the crash, and that the
vertical stabilizer of the XB-70 had split Walker's cockpit and
flight-helmet into two.

This is a very interesting, unknown (by me) piece of history. I grew up
in the 60's and followed the space program. But I have never read or
heard about this accident. Its a very sad event. Thank you for this
memorial to the two brave men, who lost their lives.

Beautiful site, The tragedy that haunts me is that all the pilots
involved in this accident took calculated risks, and to lose test
pilots for a useless photo shoot brings it all home.
Are there other memorials to Joe Walker and Major Cross? I am
researching test pilots and would apreciate any information regarding
these 2 outstanding aviation pioneers.
Walkers last words regarding the dangers involved in this flight must
have resonated for years, and still do for me personally.
If anyone out there has any further information regarding this request,
I would be very appreciative.
Thank you.

I just had a wonderful visit this morning with Colonel Cotton. I told
him that his wife and my mother-in-law went to school together. I had
never met the Colonel before, but knew who he was. What an intellectual
person. He is a very caring person. As a matter of fact he grew up just
a few miles from where we now live. May God bless the Colonel and his
wife.

I'm a bit biased but in my opinion the XB70 is the
most beautiful plane ever built. Your web page
gave me some insights into it's brief life that I
have never seen before. I still marvel at what
was accomplished, as you say, with stone age tech.
Amazing.
I said I'm a bit biased because my godfather was
a subcontractor on the project and before his death
gave to me a corporate model of the plane, made of some
kind of very hard plastic. Yellowed with age, it still
in my eyes was the most beautiful thing I'd seen.
(And at the time I didn't even know it was called Valkyre
the mounting stand only reads XB70)
So, thank you for your informative web page... in some
small way it makes me feel closer to my godfather.
Thank You,
Tom

My father Richard D Kohl Sr or "Dick" for those who new him recently
passed away after having been diagnosed with cancer of the liver,
brain, lungs. He worked on the NERVA project for Aerojet General at
NRDS Jackass Flats, Nevada from it's inception to completion. He was
also involved with the Atlas and Mariner Space Programs for Convair and
Pratt/Whitney. I have been learning more about what he did since his
death 8-17-2004 by visiting sites such as these than he was able to
tell us as children for security reasons in the 1960's. A memorial for
him will be on 9-18-2004 at 1pm at the Masonic Memorial Temple 2200 W.
Mesquite Las Vegas, Nevada all are welcome especially those who knew
him. He was very proud of his accomplishments as we are!
